Freshness & Safety
  • Can Tree Top apple slices & chunks be frozen to extend the shelf life?

No.  Freezing the fresh-cut apples causes them to turn brown and soggy almost immediately after they thaw.  Slices and chunks should NEVER be placed in frozen storage.

  • Do I have to refrigerate my juice or apple sauce?

Yes.  For best freshness and optimal flavor we recommend that all multi-serve containers be refrigerated after opening.  None refrigeration of the product will result in a shortened shelf-life; therefore, we do not recommend this practice.

  • How can I tell if a product is spoiled?

Indicators of spoilage would include a change in flavor, smell or appearance. Smells like vinegar, alcohol, wine or beer would indicate that the product has started to turn.   At this point we suggest discarding the remainder.

Since Tree Top does not add any preservatives, once a container is opened and refrigerated we recommend about a week.  Our products are pasteurized; this process insures our customers in the safety of consuming our products.
  • How long can I keep my Tree Top apple juice open?

Tree Top apple juice does not contain any preservatives, therefore, once open we recommend about a week in the refrigerator.

  • How long will your Tree Top apple slices stay crisp and fresh?

19 days from the date of production, under optimal handling and storage conditions.  It is critical that they be kept between 34° 3 38°F to ensure the slices reach their full shelf-life potential.

  • How should Tree Top apple slices be stored and handled?

Tree Top fresh-cut apple products should be stored between 34° - 38°F in order to achieve their full shelf-life of 19 days, and must never be frozen.  Care should also be taken to keep them from staying out at room temperature for any extended length of time.  The more exposure to temperatures outside of the recommended range will result in a reduction of shelf-life.  It's also advised that fresh-cut apple products not be stored in proximity to onions or other strong-smelling products as these odors will be absorbed by the slices, affecting their flavor.

  • If the Tree Top apple slices / chunks are past their Use Thru date, is it okay to eat them?

Just like whole apples from the market, fresh apple slices and chunks are not a pasteurized food product.  Because of this, we do not recommend that fresh-cut apple products be consumed past the date code printed on the package, regardless of their appearance.

  • Is NatureSeal Safe?

NatureSeal is merely a blend of calcium and vitamin C and is completely safe for consumption.  NatureSeal contains no sulfites, allergens, or preservatives and is approved for use in organic produce.

  • What is the shelf life of your product?

Tree Top implemented the use of Best By dates on its products in early 2007.  The shelf life on our products differs from the type of juice to the size of the container it is in.  Please know that the Best By date which is printed on the container will reflect the shelf life through that date, un-opened.

Tree Top cannot provide a 100% guarantee that products which contain ascorbic acid are free from corn or corn derivatives.  The ascorbic acid used by Tree Top is manufactured through a fermentation and purification process utilizing a corn-based substrate.  The ingredient suppliers state that trace amounts of corn or corn derivatives may be present in the ascorbic acid ingredient.

Additionally, any product containing high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) may contain corn derivatives.  Please note that all Tree Top and Seneca apple sauce (including Tree Top Natural apple sauce) also contain ascorbic acid.

  • What are the benefits to drinking apple juice?

Apple juice is not a particularly rich source of vitamins. Tree Top fortifies a lot of our apple juice with Vitamin C, and you can tell by looking at the nutrition facts part of the label, or the ingredient statement if Vitamin C has been added. While apple juice isn’t high in vitamins, it is high in what are called “phytonutrients” such as flavonoids and antioxidants that have been found to be beneficial to good health.

  • What does organic mean?

The USDA's National Organic Program is intended to assure consumers that the organic foods they purchase are produced, processed, and certified to be consistent with national organic standards.

Our Tree Top Organic Apple Juice and Apple Sauce are Certified USDA ORGANIC.

  • What equals a fruit serving?

Any fruit or 100% Juice counts as part of the Fruit Group.  In fact, drinking 100% Fruit Juice is an easy way to boost your fruit servings each day.

According to the USDA MyPyramid food program, 100% juices can be appropriate substitutes for whole fruits.

The following counts as 1 cup of fruit:

        = 1 small apple

= 1 cup 100% Fruit Juice (like 100% Apple Juice)

         = 1 cup Apple Sauce

  • What fruit exchange does the juice equal?

For apple or other juices, ½ cup of fruit juice is equal to one fruit exchange.

  • What prevents your apple slices from turning brown?

The slices are bathed in NatureSeal-a solution that is a blend of calcium and ascorbic acid (Vitamin C).  This allows the fresh-cut apple slices to maintain their color, texture and freshness for 19 days when handled and stored properly.

Packaging
  • Are your cans recyclable?

Yes, all of our Tree Top cans are recyclable.

  • Are your plastic containers recyclable?

Yes, all of our plastic containers are recyclable.

  • Can I freeze the plastic bottles?

Although these containers are food grade, we do not recommend freezing product in these containers.

  • Can I use your plastic containers to store food products?

Although these containers are food grade, we do not recommend reusing them.

  • Why didn’t I get my deposit back when I recycled my plastic bottles?

You’re speaking of CRV-California Redemption Value.

CRV applies to aluminum, plastic, glass or metal beverage containers marked with the "CRV" designation or that are considered a single serve container.  Our 46 oz and larger plastic containers do not qualify for the CRV but are still recyclable.

  • Why does the Tree Top gallon container have a #5 and a #7 recycling symbol?

    Yes, and here's why...

Recycling symbols are used to classify plastics for recycling. Symbols 1-6 indicate the plastic in the container is made from defined materials. If the container doesn't fall neatly into one of those categories, it is assigned a "7". Tree Top uses plastic containers made from PETE (symbol 1) and polypropylene (PP symbol 5). Because there is an oxygen barrier, which helps to keep juice fresh, in our bottles, they carry both a "5 compatible" and a "7" symbol; however, there is no polycarbonate material in them.

According to the current information, it is the polycarbonate material (Bisphenol-A) that is leaching from plastic containers, which may or may not be a health hazard. None of our packaging materials contain this type of material.

Both our juice bottles and apple sauce containers are in compliance with the US and Canadian Food Packaging regulations.

  • What is the difference between Tree Top apple juice and apple cider?

The only difference in the two is in the acidity content.  The apple cider has more of a tarter flavor than the apple juice but both are processed exactly alike.  In other words we use more of a tarter blend of apples for the cider resulting in the tarter flavor that we all have become accustomed to.

Production Process
  • Do you use chemicals to peel your apples?

No.  Our apples go through a series of washings before they move by conveyor to a fruit disintegrator, which is much like a large and powerful blender.  Here the apples are broken into small bite-size fragments which go through decanters and centrifuges where the solids are removed.

  • How is Tree Top apple juice processed?

On average 50 tons of juicers every hour are washed in a huge rotary drum going through four-stages of washings.  A conveyor moves the fruit to the disintegrator, which is much like a large and powerful blender.  Here the apples are broken into small pieces reducing them to bite-size fragments.

Apple fragments move to the decanters and centrifuges where the juice is separated from the solids.  The juice is then clarified through a multi-stage process until what remains is pure, cloudless, amber-colored juice.
