Old Fashioned Baked Apples

  • 4 large Granny Smith or Red Delicious apples
  • 1/4 cup chopped nuts
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 cup apple juice
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Peel 1 1/2 inches of skin from top of apples. Remove core and seeds, keeping bottom intact. Score around middle of the apple with sharp knife. Combine nuts, raisins and 1/4 cup brown sugar. Pack into apples.

Place in deep baking dish; add apple juice. Cover and bake 35 to 40 minutes, until apples are soft, but not mushy. Heat all remaining ingredients in small saucepan over low heat, stirring occasionally, about 15 minutes. When apples are baked, pour sauce over. Cover and bake an additional 5 minutes. Makes 4 servings.
