Forty-one million Americans are food insecure right now, many of them are families with young children. Here at Tree Top, we believe everyone – every adult and child – should have access to good food. Wanting to have a direct impact on the food insecure families living in our community, we sponsored a mobile food truck through 2nd Harvest. Mobile food trucks provide a dignified way for people to get the food they need and want. It is set up similar to a farmer’s market and the individuals be served can choose which food items they would like to take, instead of being given a pre-packaged box. Together with them and 26 employees, using their volunteer time off (VTO), we set out to hopefully make a difference in the lives of as many people as possible.
It takes a village to feed a village. This was definitely the realization we had arriving at the sweltering fairgrounds parking lot an hour before the event was supposed to officially start. Within minutes we were sent to work bagging food, arranging tables, setting up canopies, and getting names from the already growing line. Asparagus juice was flying, bags were being tossed, and we were all working together to ensure this event would be amazing.
Once noon rolled around, the people we were there to serve started coming through. There was no one profile to categorize the people who were in need. Some were young, some were old, some had infants, some were with their elderly grandparents, some came alone, some came in large family groups – hunger and food insecurity can affect anyone.
The most amazing part about this event was being able to witness firsthand how important food pantries and banks are to these people. We cannot tell you how many people thanked us profusely for setting this up for them, when in reality we were just as thankful to be there for them.
After two chaotic, fun hours everyone was sweaty, covered in dirt, and grinning from ear to ear. The final numbers had come in – over 250 families were fed, totaling over 900 people from our community.
We strive to make our community a better place for everyone and creating this partnership with 2nd Harvest was a no-brainer. Everyone deserves good food. It’s more than just a moto or our tagline – it’s a way of thinking and living. Our hope is in the future our employees with be able to give back using the resources available to them, and that you’ll find a way to give back too.
